Aren’t you all jealous of the people who always eat tons of food and never seem to get fat? I wish I could say ‘same’, but luckily I am a member of that group. The group of people who don’t get fat, even after eating more than a wrestler does. Two interlinked factors contribute to this phenomenon, which is metabolism and lifestyle. It has been proven that people with fast metabolism don't gain weight easily. So, a faster metabolism may help you in losing weight. Not just weight, a fast metabolism offers a huge number of other benefits. So, if you want to reap the best out of your body’s system. I have some easy ways to improve your metabolism.
What is metabolism?
Harvard Researchers define Metabolism as “The series of chemical reactions in a living organism that create and break down energy necessary for life. More simply, it's the rate at which your body expends energy or burns calories.” Most researchers are not completely sure of the factors that influence the difference in metabolism between people. Researchers have been able to predict metabolism of a person through factors like “the amount of lean muscle and fat tissue in the body, age, and genetics”. Gender also plays an important role and so does age, our metabolism slows down as we grow older.
Though most of these factors and beyond our control, studies have found that various lifestyle practices can significantly affect our body processes. Which ultimately influences our metabolism, this is the reason why people with certain healthy habits tend to maintain their fast metabolism through age. The lifestyle of a person also influences other immediate factors of metabolism like fat tissue and lean muscles. Now, that we know that we can significantly influence our metabolism, let us learn how. With some easy ways to improve your metabolism that have helped me personally to maintain my high metabolism.
1. Drink water
If you know me at all, you might be aware that I am obsessed with water. I drink a large amount of water every day without fail. Thankfully, water helps the metabolism and has worked wonders for me. This is because people who drink water instead of sugary drinks, consume fewer calories and also water temporarily speeds up your metabolism. “Studies have shown that drinking 17 ounces (0.5 litres) of water increases resting metabolism by 10–30% for about an hour.” So, just imagine what drinking an adequate amount of water will do for you.
2. Build Lean Muscle
There is a direct relationship between the amount of lean muscle in the body to metabolism. The more the lean muscle, less the fat and more the metabolism. So, it might be a good practice to start weight training, HIIT or whatever exercise that works for you and consume proteins. There’s a slight issue through Michael Rosenbaum, a Columbia University professor who says that: "If you have more muscle, it burns fuel more rapidly. But that’s only half the question." If you do gain more muscle and effectively speed up your metabolism, "you have to fight the natural tendency to [want to] eat more as a result of your higher metabolism." The good thing is though, you don’t need to stop eating, you can even increase your calorie intake with huge margins while making sure that your exercise routine compensates for that.
3. Never diet
Though there are a limited number of things you can do to fasten your metabolism. There are a lot of mistakes you can make, that can even slow down your metabolism. Dieting is the major one among them. With a slow metabolism, weight loss becomes a dream after you stop your dieting. This is the reason why so many people tend to lose weight while dieting, but end up gaining even more weight when they stop. Metabolism slows down during dieting due to the "metabolic adaptation". So, a quick fix for weight loss can do further damage to your system in the long run.
4. Adopt lifestyle changes you can sustain
If you are aiming for a fast metabolism when you have a slow one, you need to think practically. You can’t improve your body function overnight. So, you need to make lifestyle changes you can sustain in the long run. I am going to give you a list of lifestyle changes that you can adapt according to your convenience. The following changes do not provide dynamic effects like the others in the list, but can be more favourable in the long run. Considered that they are practised consistently.
